What Is It?
Platelet-rich plasma, otherwise known as PRP, is a treatment commonly used in dermatology. PRP therapy for hair loss works because it utilizes the body’s own natural processes to restore hair growth.
Blood has two components — red blood cells and plasma. Plasma has white blood cells and platelets in it, and platelets are rich in growth factor. PRP therapy works by separating the plasma from the blood cells and using the growth factor to restore hair growth. PRP therapy stimulates the activity of hair follicles and promotes the growth of new hair and it can repair damaged tissue.
What Can I Expect?
During a PRP therapy procedure, blood is drawn from the patient. With a centrifuge, the blood drawn is spun to separate the blood cells from the plasma, which is then injected into the scalp at the level of the hair follicles. Because the plasma is injected into specific parts of the patient’s scalp, it triggers hair growth where it’s most needed.
The procedure has minimal discomfort and minimal downtime. For the desired results, most patients undergo the procedure once a month for three to four months, then every three or six months thereafter. The most important part is to be consistent with treatments to achieve the results a patient wants. The healthier hair will slowly begin its growth over time.
Am I a Candidate?
Anyone who is experiencing hair loss, generic and/or early, is a great candidate for this procedure, as well as anyone struggling with thinning hair, baldness or alopecia areata.
